Also written as: FAST — Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma

Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma - bedside ultrasound examination to detect free fluid in trauma patients.

Full Definition

A rapid, non-invasive bedside ultrasound examination performed to identify hemoperitoneum, hemopericardium, or hemothorax in trauma patients. The examination focuses on four key areas: right upper quadrant (hepatorenal recess), left upper quadrant (splenorenal recess), pelvis (pouch of Douglas), and subxiphoid cardiac view. A positive FAST exam indicating free fluid often prompts immediate surgical intervention. Extended FAST (eFAST) includes bilateral lung examination for pneumothorax detection.
