MAIS represents the highest single Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) score assigned to any injury sustained by a trauma patient. The AIS scores range from 1 (minor) to 6 (maximum, currently untreatable), and MAIS provides a simple way to communicate the severity of the most serious injury. In surgical critical care documentation, MAIS helps classify trauma severity, guide resource allocation, and facilitate quality improvement initiatives. It differs from the Injury Severity Score (ISS) which considers multiple injuries across different body regions.
