The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is a critical transition area where patients recover from anesthesia and undergo initial post-operative monitoring. In surgical critical care contexts, PACU serves as the first checkpoint for identifying complications before ICU admission. Patients typically remain in PACU until they meet specific discharge criteria including stable vital signs, adequate pain control, and return of protective reflexes.
Usage
Usage note: Always capitalize as PACU, not Pacu or pacu.
