Full Definition

Positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) is the pressure maintained in the airways at the end of expiration during mechanical ventilation, typically set between 5-15 cmH2O. In surgical critical care, PEEP helps recruit collapsed alveoli, improve ventilation-perfusion matching, and enhance oxygenation in patients with ARDS or other lung injuries. Higher PEEP levels may improve oxygenation but can reduce venous return and cardiac output. Optimal PEEP selection requires balancing improved oxygenation against potential hemodynamic compromise.
