Bioburden testing is a microbiological assessment conducted to determine the population of viable microorganisms contaminating medical devices or instruments prior to sterilization. This testing involves sampling techniques such as immersion, sonication, or swabbing to recover microorganisms, followed by culture and enumeration on appropriate media. Bioburden testing serves multiple purposes: validating cleaning effectiveness, establishing appropriate sterilization parameters, monitoring process consistency, and ensuring compliance with sterility assurance levels. The results help determine whether cleaning protocols are adequate and whether sterilization cycles will be effective. High bioburden levels may indicate inadequate cleaning, compromised processes, or the need for additional bioburden reduction steps before sterilization.
