The ability of medical devices and materials to perform their function without causing adverse biological responses.

Full Definition

Biocompatibility in surgical instrument reprocessing refers to the requirement that cleaning chemicals, sterilization residues, and packaging materials must not cause toxic, allergic, or other adverse reactions when instruments contact patient tissues. This includes evaluation of chemical residues from detergents and sterilants, material degradation products, and any substances that might transfer from instruments to patients during use. Biocompatibility testing is particularly important when introducing new cleaning chemistries or sterilization methods to ensure patient safety is maintained throughout the reprocessing cycle.
