The process of removing trapped sterilant gas from instruments and packaging materials after gas sterilization to prevent toxic exposure.

Full Definition

Degassing, also called aeration, is a critical post-sterilization process required after gas sterilization methods such as ethylene oxide (EtO) or hydrogen peroxide plasma. During this process, residual sterilant gases absorbed by instruments and packaging materials are removed through controlled air circulation or vacuum systems. Degassing times vary based on the sterilization method, instrument materials, and packaging type, with EtO requiring extended aeration periods due to its toxic nature. Failure to adequately degas instruments can result in patient exposure to harmful chemical residues, making this step essential for patient safety.
