A sterilization process that relies on steam's natural buoyancy to displace air from the sterilization chamber.

Full Definition

Gravity air removal, also known as gravity displacement, is a sterilization method that uses the physical properties of steam to remove air from the sterilization chamber and load items. As steam enters the chamber, its lower density causes it to rise while the denser, cooler air naturally settles and is vented from the bottom of the chamber. This process continues until the chamber is filled with saturated steam at the desired temperature and pressure. Gravity air removal is typically used for non-porous items, simple instrument sets, and loads without complex geometries or packaging that might trap air. While less efficient than prevacuum systems for complex loads, gravity displacement is reliable for appropriate applications and is often used for emergency or flash sterilization cycles.
