Full Definition

A gravity displacement sterilizer is a type of steam sterilization system that removes air from the sterilization chamber through natural gravitational forces rather than mechanical vacuum systems. Steam enters at the top of the chamber and, being lighter than air, gradually displaces the cooler, denser air downward and out through drains at the bottom. This process is slower and less efficient than prevacuum systems, requiring longer sterilization times and being suitable primarily for non-porous, solid instruments. Gravity displacement sterilizers are less expensive than prevacuum units but have limitations in sterilizing wrapped items, porous materials, or complex devices with lumens.
