A steam penetration test is a validation procedure that assesses whether steam can effectively reach all areas of a sterilizer load and displace air from within packaging materials and instrument assemblies. The test typically uses temperature or chemical indicators placed in challenging locations such as the center of wrapped sets, inside lumened devices, or at air entrapment points. Results confirm that sterilization conditions are achieved throughout the load, not just in easily accessible areas. Failed steam penetration tests indicate problems with load configuration, packaging methods, sterilizer performance, or steam quality. This testing is essential for validating new packaging systems and sterilization cycles.
