Full Definition

Steam quality is a fundamental parameter in steam sterilization that measures the proportion of vapor to liquid water in steam, expressed as dryness fraction or percentage. High-quality steam should have a dryness fraction of at least 97%, meaning no more than 3% liquid water content. Steam quality also encompasses chemical purity, requiring steam to be free from additives, volatile substances, and non-condensable gases that could interfere with sterilization or leave harmful residues on instruments. Poor steam quality can lead to wet packs, inadequate sterilization, and instrument damage from chemical deposits.
