Detection methods include temperature-pressure relationship monitoring, where steam temperature exceeds that predicted by pressure readings, and specialized test devices that respond differently to saturated versus superheated steam. Superheated steam occurs due to excessive heating, inadequate pressure control, or heat transfer from sterilizer walls and can significantly reduce sterilization efficacy by decreasing moisture availability for microbial destruction. Early detection allows for corrective action before processing critical loads.
