Full Definition

Superheated steam is water vapor that has been heated beyond its saturation temperature at a given pressure, resulting in steam that contains insufficient moisture for effective sterilization. Unlike saturated steam, which exists in equilibrium with water and contains optimal moisture content, superheated steam behaves more like hot dry air. This condition significantly reduces sterilization effectiveness because microbial kill depends on moisture transfer and coagulation of microbial proteins. Superheated steam can result from steam line overheating, inadequate condensate removal, or improper steam generation. Detection requires temperature and pressure monitoring to ensure steam quality meets sterilization requirements.
