squamous cell carcinoma

A type of non-small cell lung cancer arising from the squamous epithelial cells lining the airways.

Full Definition

Squamous cell carcinoma is a major histological subtype of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), accounting for approximately 25-30% of all lung cancers. It typically arises in the central airways and is strongly associated with smoking history. Unlike adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma rarely harbors targetable mutations like EGFR or ALK rearrangements, making it less amenable to targeted therapy. The diagnosis is confirmed through histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining. These tumors often present as centrally located masses and may cause symptoms related to airway obstruction.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify anatomical location and differentiation grade when documented.
