fasciotomy

Surgical incision through fascia to relieve compartment pressure and restore tissue perfusion.

Full Definition

Fasciotomy is the definitive treatment for compartment syndrome, involving surgical division of the tight fascial envelope surrounding affected muscle compartments. The procedure creates immediate decompression, allowing restoration of blood flow to ischemic tissues. In trauma patients, fasciotomies are often performed as emergency procedures and may require multiple incisions to address all involved compartments. The wounds are typically left open initially and require staged closure or skin grafting once swelling subsides.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from fasciectomy, which involves removal rather than simple incision of fascia
