Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma, an ultrasound protocol to detect free fluid in trauma patients.

Full Definition

The FAST exam is a bedside ultrasound examination performed in trauma patients to rapidly identify hemoperitoneum, hemopericardium, or hemothorax. It examines four views: right upper quadrant (hepatorenal recess), left upper quadrant (splenorenal recess), pelvis (pouch of Douglas), and subxiphoid (pericardial). Extended FAST (eFAST) includes bilateral lung fields to assess for pneumothorax.
