hemodynamic instability

Abnormal blood pressure, heart rate, or circulation indicating cardiovascular compromise.

Full Definition

Hemodynamic instability refers to abnormalities in blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac output, or systemic circulation that suggest cardiovascular compromise. In trauma patients, this often indicates ongoing blood loss, cardiac injury, or distributive shock. Clinical signs include hypotension, tachycardia, altered mental status, and decreased urine output. Recognition of hemodynamic instability guides the urgency of intervention and may indicate the need for immediate surgical control of bleeding.

Usage

Usage note: Use to describe overall circulatory status rather than individual vital sign abnormalities.
