intraoperative ultrasound

Real-time ultrasound imaging performed during surgery to guide tumor localization and resection margins.

Full Definition

An imaging technique used during urologic oncology procedures, particularly partial nephrectomy, to identify tumor boundaries, assess depth of invasion, and guide precise resection. Intraoperative ultrasound helps surgeons achieve negative margins while preserving maximum healthy tissue. The technique is especially valuable for endophytic renal masses that are not visible on the kidney surface and for confirming complete tumor removal during nephron-sparing procedures.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as 'IOUS' in operative notes.
