Surgical removal of the prostate gland, performed via various approaches.

Full Definition

The surgical excision of the prostate gland, which can be performed as radical prostatectomy (complete removal with seminal vesicles) for cancer treatment or simple prostatectomy (adenoma removal) for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Surgical approaches include open retropubic, perineal, laparoscopic, and robot-assisted techniques. Radical prostatectomy aims to achieve cancer control while preserving urinary continence and erectile function when possible.
