radical cystectomy
Surgical removal of the entire bladder and surrounding tissues for cancer treatment.
Full Definition
A major surgical procedure involving complete removal of the bladder, prostate (in men) or uterus and ovaries (in women), and nearby lymph nodes to treat invasive bladder cancer. The procedure requires urinary diversion to create a new way for urine to leave the body. This is considered the gold standard treatment for muscle-invasive bladder cancer and high-risk non-muscle-invasive disease.

Usage note: Always specify 'radical' to distinguish from less extensive bladder surgeries.
