Cryptorchidism, also known as undescended testis, is a congenital condition where one or both testes fail to complete their normal descent from the abdomen into the scrotum during fetal development. The undescended testis may be located anywhere along the normal path of descent, including the abdomen, inguinal canal, or superficial inguinal pouch. Unilateral cryptorchidism is more common than bilateral. Risk factors include premature birth, low birth weight, and family history. If spontaneous descent does not occur by 6 months of age, surgical intervention (orchiopexy) is typically recommended to prevent complications such as infertility, malignant transformation, and testicular torsion.
