The procedure involves transrectal delivery of focused ultrasound beams that generate temperatures of 80-100°C in the focal zone, causing immediate coagulative necrosis while sparing surrounding tissues. HIFU can be used as primary therapy for organ-confined prostate cancer or as salvage therapy following radiation failure. Real-time magnetic resonance imaging guidance enhances precision and monitoring of treatment effects. Potential side effects include urethral stricture, erectile dysfunction, and rarely, rectal injury.
