phimosis

Pronunciation: fy-MOH-sis

Condition where the foreskin cannot be retracted over the glans penis.

Full Definition

Phimosis is a condition characterized by the inability to retract the foreskin over the head of the penis. It can be physiological (normal in young children) or pathological (due to scarring, infection, or inflammation). Physiological phimosis is common in infants and young boys and typically resolves by adolescence. Pathological phimosis may result from conditions such as balanitis xerotica obliterans, recurrent infections, or trauma. Treatment options include topical corticosteroids, preputioplasty, or circumcision depending on severity and underlying cause. Proper diagnosis helps distinguish between normal developmental variants and pathological conditions requiring intervention.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish between physiological (normal) and pathological phimosis in documentation.
