A renal scan is a nuclear medicine procedure that uses radioactive tracers to assess kidney function, blood flow, and structure. Different radiopharmaceuticals can be used depending on the clinical question: technetium-99m DTPA for glomerular filtration rate assessment, technetium-99m MAG3 for tubular function evaluation, or technetium-99m DMSA for cortical imaging and scar detection. The study provides quantitative information about individual kidney function, can detect obstruction, and helps evaluate conditions like vesicoureteral reflux, pyelonephritis, and renal artery stenosis. Results are particularly valuable in pediatric urology for monitoring kidney development and function.

Usage note: Specify the radiopharmaceutical used (DTPA, MAG3, DMSA) as each provides different information.
