A renal scan is a nuclear medicine procedure that uses radioactive tracers to assess kidney function, blood flow, and structure. Different radiopharmaceuticals can be used depending on the clinical question: technetium-99m DTPA for glomerular filtration rate assessment, technetium-99m MAG3 for tubular function evaluation, or technetium-99m DMSA for cortical imaging and scar detection.
