Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction

A standardized classification system for grading coronary artery blood flow during angiography.

Full Definition

Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) is a widely used classification system that grades coronary artery perfusion on a scale from 0 to 3, where TIMI 0 indicates no flow, TIMI 1 shows minimal flow, TIMI 2 represents partial flow, and TIMI 3 indicates normal flow. Originally developed for clinical trials of thrombolytic therapy, the TIMI classification has become standard in interventional cardiology and vascular imaging. Editors should be aware that TIMI is always capitalized and typically follows the format 'TIMI [grade] flow' in medical reports.

Usage

Usage note: Always capitalize TIMI; when abbreviated, use 'TIMI flow grade' format rather than just 'TIMI grade.'

  • "Post-intervention angiography demonstrated restoration of Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction grade 3 flow." — Cardiac catheterization report
  • "The patient presented with Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction grade 0 flow in the left anterior descending artery." — Emergency cardiology consultation
