self-expanding stent

A vascular stent made of nitinol or similar material that automatically expands to predetermined diameter when deployed.

Full Definition

A self-expanding stent is constructed from shape-memory alloys like nitinol that allow the device to expand automatically to a predetermined diameter once released from its delivery system. Unlike balloon-expandable stents, these devices do not require balloon inflation for deployment and can continue to expand gradually after placement. They are particularly useful in vessels subject to external compression or tortuous anatomy, such as carotid arteries or peripheral vessels.
