EVAR
Pronunciation: EE-var
Also written as: EVAR — endovascular aneurysm repair
Endovascular aneurysm repair; minimally invasive procedure to treat abdominal aortic aneurysms using stent grafts.
Full Definition
Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat abdominal aortic aneurysms by inserting a stent graft through small incisions in the groin. The stent graft is navigated through the femoral arteries and deployed within the aneurysm to redirect blood flow through the graft, effectively excluding the aneurysm from circulation. EVAR offers advantages over open surgical repair including reduced operative mortality, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times. However, it requires lifelong surveillance imaging and may not be suitable for all aneurysm anatomies.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from TEVAR (thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair) in documentation.
