vasospasm

Sudden constriction of blood vessel smooth muscle causing temporary vessel narrowing.

Full Definition

Vasospasm involves the acute contraction of vascular smooth muscle leading to vessel lumen reduction and decreased blood flow. In vascular medicine, it can occur spontaneously or be triggered by cold exposure, stress, or medications. Cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage and coronary vasospasm are clinically significant forms. Digital vasospasm is characteristic of Raynaud's phenomenon and can cause finger color changes and pain.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from fixed arterial narrowing due to structural disease.
