venography

Pronunciation: vee-NOG-rah-fee

Imaging procedure using contrast material to visualize the venous system and detect abnormalities.

Full Definition

Venography, also called phlebography, involves injection of contrast material into the venous system followed by fluoroscopic or CT imaging to evaluate venous anatomy and pathology. The procedure can diagnose deep vein thrombosis, venous stenosis, and congenital venous anomalies. Different techniques include ascending venography for lower extremity evaluation, pulmonary angiography for pulmonary embolism, and magnetic resonance venography as a non-invasive alternative. While largely replaced by ultrasound for routine DVT detection, venography remains the gold standard for complex venous disorders.

Usage

Usage note: Specify imaging modality when possible (conventional, CT, or MR venography).

In Context
