venous reflux

Backward flow of blood in veins due to incompetent valves, commonly affecting lower extremities.

Full Definition

Venous reflux occurs when venous valves fail to prevent retrograde blood flow, leading to venous hypertension and associated complications. This condition is a primary mechanism in chronic venous disease and can result in varicose veins, skin changes, and ulceration. Assessment typically involves duplex ultrasound to evaluate valve competency and measure reflux time.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from venous obstruction, which involves blockage rather than valve dysfunction.

In Context

  • "The patient demonstrated significant venous reflux in the great saphenous vein with a reflux time of 3.2 seconds." — Vascular laboratory report
  • "Treatment options for venous reflux include compression therapy, sclerotherapy, and endovenous ablation." — Treatment plan
