Full Definition

Venous stasis refers to sluggish or reduced venous blood flow that results in blood pooling in the venous system, particularly in dependent areas such as the lower extremities. This condition is a key component of Virchow's triad for thrombosis development, along with endothelial injury and hypercoagulability. Venous stasis can result from immobility, heart failure, venous valve incompetence, or external compression. Clinical manifestations include edema, skin changes, and increased risk of venous thromboembolism. Management focuses on improving venous return through compression therapy, elevation, and mobilization.
