Full Definition

Pressure gradient refers to the measurable difference in blood pressure between two points in the vascular system, typically measured across a stenotic lesion to determine its hemodynamic significance. In vascular surgery, pressure gradients are commonly assessed using catheter-based measurements during angiography or non-invasively using Doppler ultrasound. A significant pressure gradient indicates flow-limiting stenosis that may warrant intervention. The magnitude of the gradient correlates with stenosis severity and clinical symptoms. Documentation should specify the measurement technique, anatomical location, and gradient values in mmHg. Resting and hyperemic gradients may differ significantly.
