pseudoaneurysm

Pronunciation: SOO-doh-AN-yur-izm

False aneurysm where blood is contained by surrounding tissue rather than vessel wall.

Full Definition

A contained rupture of an artery where blood flow is maintained outside the normal vessel lumen, contained only by surrounding tissues or organized hematoma rather than arterial wall layers. Pseudoaneurysms commonly occur at puncture sites, anastomotic locations, or sites of arterial injury. Unlike true aneurysms, pseudoaneurysms lack all three vessel wall layers and carry higher rupture risk, requiring different treatment approaches and documentation protocols.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish clearly from true aneurysms in all documentation.
