covered stent

A stent device with a fabric or polymer covering designed to seal vessel perforations or exclude aneurysms.

Full Definition

A specialized endovascular device consisting of a metal stent framework covered with synthetic materials such as expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) or polyurethane. Covered stents are used to treat vessel perforations, seal aneurysms, or exclude arteriovenous fistulas by creating a barrier between the vessel lumen and surrounding tissues. While providing excellent sealing properties, these devices have higher rates of restenosis and thrombosis compared to bare metal stents due to their thrombogenic covering materials.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from drug-eluting stents, which have pharmaceutical coatings rather than fabric coverings.
