covered stent

Endovascular prosthesis consisting of a metallic stent framework covered with graft material.

Full Definition

A covered stent, also known as a stent-graft, is an endovascular device that combines a metallic stent framework with a covering material such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyester, or other biocompatible fabrics. These devices are designed to exclude blood flow from the native vessel wall while maintaining luminal patency. Covered stents are primarily used for treating aneurysms, perforations, and arteriovenous fistulas, as well as providing a conduit in cases of extensive vessel wall damage. The graft material creates a new luminal surface that isolates the underlying pathology from the circulation while the metallic framework provides structural support.

Usage

Usage note: No hyphen when used as a noun. May be hyphenated when used as a compound modifier.
