Functional analysis involves systematically manipulating environmental conditions to determine which consequences are maintaining problematic behaviors. This experimental approach tests hypotheses about behavior function by exposing individuals to different contingency conditions (attention, escape, tangible, automatic reinforcement) while measuring behavioral responses. Unlike functional behavioral assessment which relies on indirect methods, functional analysis provides direct experimental evidence of behavior-environment relationships. This methodology is considered the gold standard for identifying behavioral functions and is particularly valuable in behavioral medicine for developing targeted interventions.
