Functional Behavioral Assessment
Also written as: FBA — Functional Behavioral Assessment
A systematic process to identify the purpose or function that a problem behavior serves for an individual.
Full Definition
A Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) is a comprehensive evaluation process used to determine why challenging behaviors occur by examining antecedents, consequences, and environmental factors that maintain the behavior. The assessment typically involves direct observation, interviews, and data collection to identify whether behaviors serve functions such as attention-seeking, escape/avoidance, sensory stimulation, or tangible rewards. Results inform the development of targeted behavioral intervention plans that address the underlying function rather than just the topography of the behavior.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from functional analysis, which involves experimental manipulation.
