Functional Communication Training (FCT) is a differential reinforcement procedure that teaches individuals to emit appropriate communicative responses as alternatives to problem behaviors. Based on functional analysis results, FCT identifies the function served by problem behavior and teaches a more socially acceptable way to achieve the same outcome. This evidence-based intervention is widely used in developmental disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and other populations where communication deficits contribute to behavioral challenges. Success depends on ensuring the alternative communication response is more efficient than the problem behavior.
