Enzymatic debridement involves the application of topical enzyme preparations to selectively dissolve necrotic tissue while preserving viable tissue. Common enzymes include collagenase and papain-urea preparations. This method is particularly useful for patients who cannot tolerate surgical debridement or for wounds with mixed viable and non-viable tissue that requires selective removal. The process is slower than surgical debridement but offers greater precision in tissue preservation.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from 'autolytic debridement' which uses the body's own enzymes in a moist environment.
