Enzymatic necrosectomy is a non-surgical method for removing necrotic tissue from burn wounds using topically applied proteolytic enzymes such as collagenase or bromelain-based preparations. This technique selectively digests necrotic collagen while preserving viable tissue, making it particularly useful for burns in anatomically sensitive areas or in patients who are poor surgical candidates. The process is slower than surgical debridement but may result in better preservation of viable tissue and reduced need for extensive grafting. It requires careful monitoring for signs of infection and may be combined with other debridement methods.
