The minimum energy required to successfully terminate ventricular fibrillation, typically tested during ICD implantation.

Full Definition

Defibrillation threshold (DFT) represents the minimum shock energy needed to reliably convert ventricular fibrillation back to normal rhythm. DFT testing during ICD implantation involves inducing ventricular fibrillation and delivering progressively lower energy shocks to determine the minimum effective energy. Most modern ICDs have maximum outputs of 35-40 joules, providing substantial safety margins above typical DFT values of 5-15 joules. Some centers have moved away from routine DFT testing due to improved lead technology and device reliability.
