lead fracture

A structural failure of a cardiac lead conductor resulting in loss of electrical continuity.

Full Definition

Lead fracture represents a mechanical failure of the lead's internal conductor wires, resulting in complete or intermittent loss of electrical connection between the pulse generator and the electrode. Fractures can occur anywhere along the lead body but are most common at stress points such as the ligature site, clavicular area, or near the lead connector. Lead fractures may present as sudden loss of capture, sensing failure, impedance changes, or inappropriate shock delivery. Modern leads incorporate improved conductor designs and materials to reduce fracture risk, but mechanical stress from patient movement and cardiac motion remains a long-term concern.
