Lead maturation refers to the biological healing process that occurs over 6-12 weeks following cardiac lead implantation. During this period, fibrous tissue develops around the electrode tip, creating a more stable electrode-tissue interface. This maturation process typically results in gradual increases in pacing thresholds and lead impedance as the acute inflammatory response subsides and chronic scar tissue forms. Understanding lead maturation is crucial for appropriate device programming and threshold management during the post-implant period.
