magnet mode

A temporary device operating state activated by placing a magnet over an implanted cardiac device to disable certain functions.

Full Definition

Magnet mode is a special operating state triggered when a strong magnet is placed over an implanted cardiac device, causing temporary functional changes designed for emergency situations or specific procedures. In pacemakers, magnet application typically activates asynchronous pacing at a fixed rate, bypassing sensing functions and rate-responsive features. In ICDs, magnets usually disable anti-tachycardia therapies while maintaining bradycardia pacing support. The magnet response is programmable and can be disabled entirely in some devices. Magnet mode is commonly used during surgical procedures with electrocautery, emergency situations where device function must be predictable, or when device interference is suspected. The effect persists only while the magnet remains in place.
