Full Definition

Mode switching is an intelligent pacemaker algorithm designed to prevent rapid ventricular pacing during episodes of atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter. When the device detects sustained high atrial rates indicative of atrial arrhythmias, it automatically switches from dual-chamber tracking modes (like DDD) to non-tracking modes (like VVI or DDI) to avoid tracking the irregular atrial signals. This prevents the ventricles from being paced at dangerously high rates while maintaining appropriate ventricular support. Modern devices include sophisticated mode-switching algorithms with programmable detection criteria and switching behaviors.
