Morphology discrimination is a sophisticated ICD algorithm that compares the morphology (shape and pattern) of incoming electrical signals to baseline ventricular and supraventricular templates stored in the device memory. This discrimination method helps prevent inappropriate shocks by distinguishing between true ventricular arrhythmias requiring therapy and supraventricular tachycardias with aberrant conduction or pre-existing bundle branch block. The algorithm analyzes features such as signal width, amplitude, and pattern matching to make therapy decisions. Modern ICDs combine morphology discrimination with other algorithms like rate and rhythm stability for enhanced accuracy.
