shock vector

The electrical pathway between defibrillation electrodes through which high-energy current flows during shock delivery.

Full Definition

A shock vector defines the specific electrical pathway created between defibrillation electrodes during high-energy shock delivery in ICDs. The vector is determined by the configuration of active and inactive electrodes, including the shock coils on the RV lead, any atrial coils, and the pulse generator can. Common vectors include RV coil to can, RV coil to SVC coil, or dual-coil configurations. The choice of shock vector affects defibrillation efficacy and is selected based on defibrillation threshold testing and patient anatomy. Modern devices allow programming of multiple vectors with automatic vector switching if the first vector fails.

Usage note: Not to be confused with 'pacing vector' which refers to low-energy stimulation pathways.
