A steroid-eluting lead incorporates a small amount of corticosteroid medication (typically dexamethasone sodium phosphate) in a silicone plug or matrix near the electrode tip. The steroid is slowly released over weeks to months following implantation, reducing the inflammatory response and fibrotic tissue formation that naturally occurs at the electrode-myocardium interface. This technology helps maintain lower, more stable capture thresholds and better sensing over time compared to non-steroid leads. Steroid-eluting leads have become the standard of care for most pacing applications.
