Full Definition

A subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD) represents a newer approach to sudden cardiac death prevention that avoids the complications associated with transvenous lead systems. Unlike traditional ICDs that require leads threaded through blood vessels into the heart, S-ICDs are positioned entirely under the skin with the electrode placed along the left sternal border. This technology requires specific terminology in medical writing, particularly when distinguishing between conventional transvenous and subcutaneous systems in clinical documentation.
