Sternal dehiscence is a serious postoperative complication characterized by the separation or breakdown of the sternotomy closure, either at the bone level or involving the overlying soft tissues. This complication can range from superficial wound separation to complete disruption of the sternal wires or sutures with exposure of underlying mediastinal structures. Risk factors include obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, prolonged ventilation, and infection. Sternal dehiscence may require surgical revision with rewiring, rigid fixation systems, or muscle flap coverage depending on the severity and presence of infection.
